Measurements of surface elastic torques in liquid crystals : a method to measure elastic constants and anchoring energies
نویسندگان
چکیده
2014 Surface torques exerted by a nematic liquid crystal on a solid plate are investigated. Three different geometries are considered. The torques are generated by applying a uniform magnetic field to the nematic sample and are measured by a torsion pendulum. The elastic constants of the nematic Liquid Crystal and the anchoring energy at the interface can be obtained by this kind of measurements. As a main advantage of this technique, the measurements of the elastic constants are poorly sensitive to small misalignments of the director and are not affected from a finite value of the anchoring energy. Experimental results for the splay and bend elastic constants of the nematic LC 4-pentyl-4’-cyanobiphenyl (5CB) are given and compared with previous experimental results. Revue Phys. متن کاملNematic liquid crystals at rough and fluctuating interfaces.
Nematic liquid crystals at rough and fluctuating interfaces are analyzed within the Frank elastic theory and the Landau-de Gennes theory. We study specifically interfaces that locally favor planar anchoring. In the first part we reconsider the phenomenon of Berreman anchoring on fixed rough surfaces, and derive new simple expressions for the corresponding azimuthal anchoring energy. Surprisingl...
متن کاملInterfacial energy for nematic liquid crystals : beyond the spherical approximation
By means of a simple pseudomolecular model the surface elastic properties of nematic liquid crystals are analysed. We show that in the Maier-Saupe approximation for the intermolecular interaction and supposing the interaction volume of ellipsoidal shape, the bulk elastic constants of splay and twist are expected to be equal and different from the bend one. The dependence of the bulk elastic con...
متن کاملFacile measurement of single-crystal elastic constants from polycrystalline samples
Elastic constants are among the most fundamental properties of materials. Simulations of microstructural evolution and constitutive/micro-mechanistic modeling of materials properties require elastic constants that are predominately measured from single crystals that are labor intensive to grow. A facile technique is developed to measure elastic constants from polycrystalline samples. The techni...
متن کاملSurface elastic and molecular-anchoring properties of nematic liquid crystals confined to cylindrical cavities.
The measurement of the saddle-splay surface elastic constant K~4 in a nernatic liquid crystal is reported based on two independent deuterium nuclear-magnetic-resonance (H-NMR) experiments. Fifty years after the pioneering work of Oseen and Zocher, these measurements were made from observations of nematic director-field configurations and a configuration transition discovered in submicrometer-si...
